Deputy Director-General
Mr Dale Heinken is a senior executive with a focus on nuclear stewardship, operational safety, and performance in complex, high-consequence environments. His leadership experience spans across naval nuclear propulsion, defence, and industry.
Dale served in the United States Navy in senior command, engineering, and strategic roles, including Commanding Officer of USS Freedom (LCS 1) and USS Boxer (LHD 4), and Reactor Officer aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). He also served on the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board and as a strategic planner on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Following his naval service, Dale served as the President and Managing Director of Ascent Vision Technologies (AVT) Australia, a Melbourne-based company specialising in gyro-stabilised imaging systems for uncrewed aerial systems. He also served as the interim Chief Executive Officer for Langford Support services in Tasmania, which has been supporting people with a disability in the Hobart community for over 45 years.
Dale was appointed as the Deputy Director-General of the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Regulator in April 2026.
Dale holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy, master’s degrees in Information Systems and Technology and International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University and an Master of Business Administration from the University of Melbourne.
