The role of an Inspector
An inspector is appointed under the Australian Naval Nuclear Power Safety Act 2024.
An inspector's role is to monitor and ensure compliance with the licence conditions, investigate any non-compliance found, and take enforcement action if necessary.
Inspectors have the powers to:
- give directions
- give Improvement notices
- make requirements of persons representing the licence holder
- give prohibition notices.
Inspectors may investigate facility and material activities by:
- entering monitoring areas and investigation areas
- conducting searches
- operating equipment
- securing or seizing evidence.
Some inspector powers may only be exercised with consent or a warrant.
Inspectors may be assisted by other persons called ‘persons assisting’, who may exercise the same powers as the inspector.
